Social Media Manager

The Houston Local News Initiative (“HLNI”) is growing our team of passionate people on a mission to advance democracy in our communities and strengthen the lives of all Houstonians one story at a time. HLNI is launching soon as an independent, nonprofit digital news operation that will cover a broad range of topics serving the Greater Houston community. HLNI is initially supported by a coalition of three of Houston’s leading philanthropies including Arnold Ventures, The Houston Endowment and the Kinder Foundation.

At HLNI, we are expanding our newsroom team to include a Social Media Manager. The Social Media Manager will report directly to the Director of Audience Engagement and will design and execute upon all social media campaigns. You will be a strategic thought partner and force multiplier on whatever topics are most impactful for achieving the mission. Your campaigns will drive reader engagement with HLNI’s reporting and events.

The Role
What You'll Do
  • Expand our social media reach and engagement through a variety of platforms. We want you to help us become a voice that provokes conversations all over the Houston region and beyond.
  • Launch presence on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Linkedin, Pinterest, Reddit, and other platforms as needed. 
  • Develop and manage content for social media platforms to drive engagement and brand awareness.
  • Leverage tools such as Sprout Social to manage various social media content calendars.
  • Create social media designs as requested in Photoshop and other design software as needed.
  • Create and propose campaigns to promote articles and events. 
  • Share published articles, interact with followers, and create experiences through first hand social media interactions.  
  • Provide reports and metrics for social media, including SEO impact and consumer growth, from data sources like Chartbeat and Google Analytics.
  • Advise other departments on how to improve the SEO and social sharing for their content.
Who you are

You are passionate about telling stories through new social mediums. You have an eye for design and an ability to execute. You find joy in adapting the latest trends in media to drive reader engagement and celebrate reporting. 

  • Experience - You have 5+ years of experience in a social media management within a media organization
  • Mission-oriented - You’re committed to our mission to advance democracy and improve the lives of all Houstonians.
  • Self-starter - You’re ready to experience the chaos of an early stage startup, and have a proven ability to roll up your sleeves to get things done.
  • Communicator - You have excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate with and collaborate with anyone including funding sources, executives, team members and freelancers.
  • Multi-tasker - You’re able to set priorities while remaining flexible in an ever-changing environment.
  • Technical skills – You’re able to use tooling such as Sprout Social to manage posts and report on engagement. You are a proficient proofreader. You have basic graphic design skills.
